A Critical Analysis of the Tesla Model 3 Dimensions

By Muhammad Hassan •  Updated: 03/22/22 •  10 min read

The Tesla Model 3 was launched as a sustainable alternative to the usual three-box sedans like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Honda Civic, etc.

This revolutionary vehicle beats its counterparts on several aspects—one of the major being its dimensions, or in other words, its available space.

Just like three-box sedans, the Model 3 offers compartments for passengers and luggage. But due to the absence of a combustible engine, there’s extra space available in the front trunk of the vehicle too.

In this article, we’ll discuss this and a lot more things in depth from the perspective of the Tesla Model 3 dimensions.

Let’s get into the details.

Standard Range vs. Long Range vs. Performance: Tesla Model 3 Dimensions Difference

A very common question that frequently pops into the minds of people: “Is there any dimensional difference between all the trims of the Model 3?”

The answer is NO.

From the dimensions perspective, there is no SR, LR (AWD), and Performance (AWD); they are approximately the same. Even if there is any difference, it’s negligible.

That being said, let’s discuss the dimensions of the Model 3’s exterior and interior.

Model 3 Exterior Dimensions

All dimensions and image are taken from the Tesla Model 3’s owner manual.

Overall Size – A, B, C

The Model 3 measures 184.8 inches (4,694 mm) in length and 82.2 inches (2,088 mm) in width with mirrors wide open.

With mirrors folded, the Model 3’s width measures 76.1 inches (1,933 mm). With mirrors excluded, its width measures 72.8 inches (1,849 mm).

Next comes the height. The Model 3’s overall height measures 56.8 inches (1,443 mm).

Therefore, the overall volume of the Model 3 will be 184.8″ x 82.2″ x 56.8″.

Wheelbase – D

The wheelbase is the horizontal distance between the center of the rear and front wheels.

In the case of the Model 3, it measures 113.2 inches (2,875 mm).

Overhang (Front & Rear) – E, F

The lengths of a road vehicle at the front and back that extend beyond the wheelbase are known as the overhang portion of a road vehicle.

The front overhang portion of the Model 3 measures 33 inches (841 mm), and the rear measures 39 inches (978 mm).

Ground Clearance – G

The shortest distance between the lower end of the vehicle body or chassis and the road is known as ground clearance.

The majority of manufacturers describe this measurement when a vehicle is not carrying any additional weight.

The OEM ground clearance of the Model 3 (you can modify it by playing with the suspension system a bit) measures 5.5 inches (140 mm).

Track (Front & Rear) – H

The distance between the center lines of each of the two wheels on the same axle of any particular vehicle is referred to as the track.

Since the front and rear axles serve different roles on most vehicles, their track widths will vary.

The front track and the rear track of the Model 3 measures 62.2 inches (1,580 mm).

Model 3 Interior Dimensions

Now that we’re stepping inside the Model 3, let’s see what it offers.

Headroom

Credit to Tesla

This is the vertical measurement from the seat bottom to the roof of a car.

The Model 3 has a headroom measurement of 40.3 inches (1,024 mm) on the front and 37.7 inches (998 mm) on the rear.

That is more than average headroom in most sedans and hatchbacks (from 39.5 inches at the front to 37.5 inches at the rear).

Even if you’re 6 feet tall, you’ll feel normal while sitting in a Model 3 because it will have plenty of space above your head at both the front and the rear.

So how does the Model 3 host a 6’7” tall person? Jeff from the Now You Know YouTube channel has the answer for you:

He is more comfortable in the Model 3 than his Model S.

Legroom

The legroom is the space in front of your legs. Now taller people will want to pay close attention to that.

The Model 3 comes with a legroom measurement of 42.7 inches (1,085 mm) on the front and 35.2 inches (894 mm) on the rear.

Again, if you’re 6 feet tall, your legs are not going to get stuck in there. The rear legroom feels small on paper, but it’s sufficient once you get used to your Model 3.

Shoulder Room

Most people rarely consider the shoulder room when buying a car.

Well, they should. Shoulder room is the measurement of the width of the back seat, which means it decides your horizontal range of motion.

The Model 3 comes with a shoulder room measurement of 56.3 inches (1,430 mm) on the front and 54 inches (1,372 mm) on the rear.

This is pretty spacious. Even on the rear seats, you can adjust three average males easily.

Still any doubt left?

Hip Room

It’s the measurement of the gap on both sides of your hip, including your hip once you sit in the car. It defines the width of your seat cushion.

The Model 3 comes with a hip room measurement of 53.4 inches (1,356 mm) on the front and 52.4 inches (1,331 mm) on the rear.

For the front seats, it’s normally sufficient, but in the rear when three passengers are sitting, you may not have the privilege the front seats have.

Tesla Model 3 Weights (kg)

Mass in Running Order (Includes Driver)

It’s the total mass of a vehicle, including its dry weight, the mass of all standard types of equipment, liquids, and the driver’s weight.

The Model 3 Standard Range comes with three variants that have different mass in running order:

The more weight at the rear is due to the set of batteries which rest mostly in the rear portion, except for AWD where the weight is almost balanced in the front and the rear.

Maximum Mass of Optional Equipment

How much weight you can put on your Model 3 under safety limits is your maximum mass of optional equipment.

Again, for each variant, the limit is different:

TPMLM (Technically Permissible Maximum Laden Mass)

TPMLM is the mass allocated to a vehicle based on its construction type and design performance.

All variants of the Model 3 have different TPMLM:

TPMMM (Technically Permissible Maximum Mass On the Axle)

TPMMM is the mass corresponding to the maximum vertical static mass that the axle exerts on the road surface. It varies based on vehicle type.

All variants of the Model 3 come with the same TPMMM of 1,110 kg at the front and 1,275 kg at the rear.

Tesla Model 3 Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity is something you’re going to like about the Model 3, particularly if you’re a family person.

The front trunk (frunk) can carry up to 3.1 cu ft (88 L), allowing you to pack 25 kg in it. More than 25 kg can damage your vehicle per Tesla’s guidelines.

The trunk volume of the Model 3 is 19.8 cu ft, including the under-floor storage space, but that’s not it. You can expand the trunk by folding the rear seats, and that’ll increase the volume to 43 cu ft.

To put things in perspective, the Model 3’s cargo capacity can easily handle 15 carry-on suitcases with the seats folded down.

Also, with the rear seats folded, you can enable Camp Mode, which turns your Model 3 into a roomy and comfy bed where you can have an overnight rest while outdoors.

This is much more if you compare it with other sedans available in the market. Pretty much everything, from a flat-screen TV to a BMX bike, can fit in the Model 3’s trunk.

Final Thoughts

Now is the time to put all the information that we’ve learned from this guide into a conclusive opinion.

My personal conclusion is that the Model 3 is designed to give you maximum space in the interior and cargo with a large cabin, a large trunk, and a frunk.

Its exterior dimensions are smaller, simpler, and sufficient. Its wheelbase and ground clearance are fine. Its batteries are placed in a way to give this car maximum road grip.

So I would say that the Model 3 beats most of its competitors in terms of dimensions from a practical perspective.
